History Lesson
Our version of True American has been a work in progress since 2016.
In the fall of 2015, a group of 4 young men from around the United States (Maine, Maryland, Michigan, and Missouri) began working together in a small town in Oregon. We had very little money to go out, but enjoyed having drinks and playing games at home on the weekends.
In 2016, amidst a divisive US presidential election, we frugal founding fathers developed our own version of True American, a drinking game that originated on the FOX tv show New Girl, starring Zooey Deschanel. Our first few games, or "campaigns," were mostly drunken arguing over the chaotic rules (or lack thereof), but each campaign improved and an exciting tradition was born.
We went our separate ways in 2017, but True American has endured and evolved in the years since, over dozens of campaigns and candidates across the country. Note: Campaigns are typically held on holiday weekends (President's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th) for added patriotism, availability, and recovery time.
So debut if you're new to it, or just review it if you've played before. Make the game your own; adapt it to your space, your budget, your friends, your tolerance, etc.. Have fun and be responsible (enough) out there!
